IELTS task 2 practicing an argument

I hope you had some fun arguing those the for and against of those ideas I posted last time. Today, let’s just take one idea and try to develop an argument:

Here it is:

The most serious problem facing humanity is ….

a. choose a focus for your topic e.g. viruses, environmental problems, trust etc.

b. brainstorm a. the problem, what it is, who it affects, how it happens, why it is such a problem

c. write a short introduction paraphrasing the sentence: ‘The most serious problem facing humanity is ….‘ and a sentence like. There are many reasons for this problem, and I will discuss them with some possible solutions.

d. write para 1 with the reasons

(use linkers: First, second, third…, next, then, finally to show the sequence of your reasons)

e. para 2 with other arguments

(use language that presents an alternative view: Some people may disagree with this idea,
Some people may say that…however…
When stating specifically why they think like that:
They claim that…since…)

f. para 3 with some solutions

Use language like:

The best way to deal with this problem is for … to …

One (possible) way to combat ……. is to

The situation could be improved (substantially) if …
