IELTS speaking and writing – developing examples

It is a good idea to always consider an example of the topic you are discussing. Consider:

‘an example of behaviour which is typical among teenagers‘ – what would you choose here?

Here is a generic answer. See if you can complete the text with the words:

smoke resists self-confidence adulthood disobedience

maturity rebellious disagreement eligible

A commonly seen behaviour of youngsters is …………………………….. It is easy to tell a child to do what you want, but a teenager sometimes ………………………. it. This is because the teenage years is a period of time when a child tries to make steps to ………………………. . Adolescents, therefore, try to improve their self-esteem, independence and ………………………. by making their own decisions. This explains, for example, the reason why many ………………….. at this stage of their lives, even though they are not allowed to do so.
