IELTS Writing Tips – Achieve 7+ in Writing Part

Many students consider IELTS Writing part the most challenging part of the IELTS test. So, in this article, we will look at some useful tips which you can apply to boost your writing score.

Practice for Both IELTS Writing Tasks

Since the vast majority of students skip practising for writing task 1, because they think it is easier, they make a big mistake. Keep in mind that you should put a good amount of efforts to practise writing task 1.

Take your time to practice for both tasks, and once you master them, then take the exam.

In contrast, if you skip practising for writing task 1, there is a high risk that you will not do good at that task, and getting a low score for that section will result in an overall decreased score. That is one thing you do not want to happen to you. Remember, writing task 1 counts 1/3 of the total writing score.

For example, if you get 5.5 from writing task 1, and 7 from writing task 2 , then your total score will be:

5.5 * 1/3 + 7 * 2/3 = 1.83 + 4.66 = 6.5

In contrast, if you get 8 from writing task 1, and 6 from writing task 2, then your overall score will be.

8 * 1/3 + 6.5 * 2/3 = 2.66 + 4.33 = 7

So, putting enough efforts on practising writing part 1, can help you achieve 7+. Achieving a high score from the writing task 1 can be easier than from writing task 2.

IELTS Writing Tips – Structure Tasks

Structuring your writing tasks is crucial for achieving a high band. If you fail to structure your writing tasks properly, you might not be able to achieve a score of more than 5.5.

So, before writing an essay, letter or graph, you must learn how you’re going to structure your writing tasks.

We have different articles for learning on how to structure essays, graphs and letters. Make sure to have an idea of how you are going to structure your writing tasks before writing them.

Check out the below links to learn more about each task.

IELTS Writing Tips – Time Management

During the real IELTS exam, we recommend that you spend 20 minutes for writing task 1, and 40 minutes for writing task 2.

But, when you practise tests at home, take more time to complete your tasks. Don’t consider to complete the tasks on time; just try to provide the quality. Once you’re sure you can write tasks well, then try to reduce the time.

For example, initially, you can spend 40 minutes to write a letter(general task 1), and once you can achieve your desired score, you can try to work on reducing the time and writing letters in 20 minutes. A similar technique you can apply for writing task 2.

Grammar and Vocabulary

Without have proper grammar and rich vocabulary, you won’t be able to achieve a high band in the IELTS Writing part. Grammar and Vocabulary together count for 50% of the total writing score.

So, don’t only write tasks, but also improve your vocabulary and grammar. I can’t emphasise how important it is to improve your grammar and vocabulary.
